Jerónimo Martins is one of Europe’s most sustainable companies

The Jerónimo Martins Group has been included in the Euronext Vigeo-Eiris Europe 120, an exclusive list of the 120 most advanced companies in Europe when it comes to sustainability practices. The Group is the only Portuguese retailer to have been included in the ranking.

This honour, based on the Group's performance in 2017, assessed more than 300 indicators in areas as diverse as Human Rights, Human Resources, Community Involvement, Corporate Governance, Environment and Business Behaviour.

Several commitments undertaken by the Jerónimo Martins Group were taken into consideration, amongst which: a 5% reduction in our carbon footprint between 2018 and 2020, a 10% reduction in the Group’s food waste during the same period, compared to 2016, and an effort to cut it down by half by 2025 - Jerónimo Martins is the first retailer in Portugal to disclose its food waste* footprint; and to purchase at least 80% of food products from local suppliers - the Group achieved an overall average of 89%, in 2017.

The Group’s best practices when it comes to economic prosperity, social development and environmental conservation have not gone unnoticed. It has been included in several indices, such as the Euronext Vigeo-Eiris Eurozone 120 and the FTSE4Good Global and Europe Indices.

In the two Euronext Vigeo-Eiris indices in which it is ranked - Eurozone 120 and Europe 120 - the Jerónimo Martins Group now features in the Advanced category, the highest performance level, with an assessment of 94% for its disclosure of information on sustainability, up 20 p.p. year-on-year.
