Groundbreaking action to protect the forest

The Serra do Açor Forest project brings together the Jerónimo Martins Group, the Arganil City Council and the vacant land owners’ associations, and aims to preserve the landscape devastated by forest fires.

This is the first combination of efforts of this kind in Portugal and will cover an inland area of 2,500 hectares. Fire-resistant tree species will be planted and new sources of income created for the local population, with funding from the Group. The project is based on a very long-term perspective and is planned for a time horizon of decades.

On this page you can find the speech given by Pedro Soares dos Santos, Chairman and CEO of the Group, on the signing of the protocol that laid the foundations for the Serra do Açor Forest project.
