Jerónimo Martins is the first private organisation in Portugal with certified digital accessibility
The Jerónimo Martins Group has just reached an important milestone in promoting digital accessibility by becoming the first private organisation in Portugal to achieve the Digital Maturity Seal – Accessibility, awarded by Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda and certified by the Portuguese Certification Association (APCER).
Over the last few years, the Jerónimo Martins Group has been working on several fronts to make its digital products and services accessible to everyone. This work, which has included, among other things, the introduction of subtitles on videos (especially with deaf or hearing-impaired people in mind), appropriate colour contrasts (facilitators for people with low vision or colour blindness), improved compatibility with screen readers and keyboard navigation, made it possible, in 2025, obtaining the Digital Maturity Seal – Accessibility Bronze Level for Our JM, the Group's intranet, which is the first platform of its kind to receive this certificate in Portugal, and for the websites of the Ethics Committee, the Customer Ombudsman Office and Be The Story, an editorial project launched by the Jerónimo Group that aims to tell remarkable stories in the fields of healthy eating, health, environment and social impact.
Obtaining these certifications is not an end in itself, but the result of recognising the Group's efforts towards inclusion and an additional motivation for it to continue promoting digital accessibility as an integral part of its sense of corporate citizenship.
Since 2012, the third Thursday in May is celebrated as World Accessibility Awareness Day, an event that aims to raise awareness of the importance of building a fairer and more inclusive digital society.
