Jerónimo Martins Foundation allocates one million euros to the reconstruction of the Central Region of Portugal and provides financial support to around 150 families of Group employees

The Jerónimo Martins Foundation will donate one million euros to the taskforce “Reconstruction of the Central Region of the Country”, created this week by the Portuguese Government to coordinate the support for the population, businesses and local authorities, and to monitor the recovery, reconstruction and revitalisation efforts in the areas affected by storm ‘Kristin’. In addition, the Foundation has already informed the Group’s Companies in Portugal of the extraordinary, non‑repayable financial support for around 150 families of employees – mainly from the municipalities of Leiria, Ourém, Marinha Grande, Pombal and Nazaré – identified as having suffered severe material damage caused by the adverse weather conditions.

To respond with the speed required by the emergency situation, the Jerónimo Martins Foundation will provide direct support to the households of the most affected employees, with a total estimated investment of around 3 million euros: 50,000 euros for each case of total loss of permanent housing, 25,000 euros for each case of partial loss of permanent housing, as well as financial support of 7,500 euros to compensate for the loss of essential household goods and up to 15,000 euros for the loss of personal means of transport (car, motorbike or bicycle).

This individualised support is provided in addition to the essential goods and food assistance that has been provided since the very beginning to the teams, with breakfast, lunch or dinner served free of charge in store cafeterias, and logistical support for personal hygiene through access to store sanitary facilities for family members in need.

With this support and the significant contribution to the newly created governmental taskforce, the Jerónimo Martins Foundation joins the wider civil society movement mobilising to provide an urgent response to the affected communities, honouring its commitment to protect the employees of the Jerónimo Martins Group and their families in the most critical moments of life, and, additionally, the most vulnerable groups of society.

The Jerónimo Martins Group established the Jerónimo Martins Foundation in March 2024, with an initial endowment of 40 million euros. More information about the Jerónimo Martins Foundation is available at https://www.fundacao-jeronimomartins.com/ (in Portuguese).
