PROTECTING OUR ECOSYSTEMS

As specialists in the sale of perishable goods – such as meat, fish, fruit and vegetables – we understand both our dependence on and our impact on biodiversity. The variety of species related to our product range, along with essential ecosystem services like pollination and the carbon cycle, are fundamental to our businesses.

Together with our suppliers and through our own operations, we have defined a set of actions across the value chain of our perishables and Private Brand products. These initiatives contribute to ecosystem conservation and restoration, while raising awareness among employees and customers about the adoption of good practices.

Our commitment to biodiversity includes several interconnected areas –from pollination and agricultural crops to deforestation, animal production, wild-caught fish, and aquaculture. Besides the support we provide to external projects aligned with our strategy, we develop and implement our own biodiversity initiatives within our operations.

Regarding the conservation of fish stocks, we have a Sustainable Fishing Strategy in place across the Group. Through Jerónimo Martins Agro-Alimentar, we also produce fish from aquaculture in the open sea, contributing to reduce the pressure on wild-fish stocks. Since 2019, we are committed to fighting deforestation as part of the Forest Positive Coalition of Action of The Consumer Goods Forum. We publicly disclose our progress and promote sustainable practices in key commodities such as beef, soy, paper/timber, and palm oil.

By promoting the preservation and restoration of biodiversity, we help strengthen the resilience and sustainability of the food production and distribution systems that support our assortments.

Partnerships and support

Over the years, we have been supporting a range of biodiversity projects focused on restoring natural habitats, protecting biodiversity and raising environmental awareness. Below is a list of the biodiversity projects we’ve been involved in.

Reforestation of the Serra do Açor Mountain – Portugal

Started in 2020, this is a joint initiative by the Jerónimo Martins Group, the Arganil Town Council, the Coimbra School of Agriculture and local landowners’ associations. The project covers 2,500 hectares and will run for 40 years, with the goal is to restore the area affected by the 2017 forest fires. It is located in the protected landscape of the Açor mountain range, near the Lousã mountain range, part of the Natura 2000 network. By the end of 2024, nearly one million trees had been planted.

Protecting wild-insect pollinators – Poland

This project was launched in 2021 by Salamander – Polish Society for Nature Conservation, with the support of Biedronka. The key initiatives throughout 2024 include a nationwide competition to design natural gardens for pollinators, the release of a special issue of Salamandra Nature Magazine, and a series of awareness campaigns across social media. Work on establishing the Polish Red List of species was also initiated in 2024.

Protection of bees – Colombia

Since 2021, Ara supports Fundabejaz, which aims to protect and save bees and raise awareness of their importance in ecosystems. In 2024, the Fundabejaz Foundation successfully rescued 50 hives, delivered 24 recovered hives to beekeepers and farmers, and carried out 91 awareness-raising campaigns with 6,420 participants. Ara also donates sugar as a food source for rescued swarms.

SOS Pollinators – Portugal

Jerónimo Martins has supported this initiative since 2014, which raises awareness, encourage conservation and protect pollinators and their habitats across Portugal. Some of the actions carried out include the launch of the SOS pollinators website, the Network of Pollinator-Friendly Schools, and the “Build a Hotel for Pollinators” nationwide competition.

Save the macaws – Colombia

Ara supports initiatives aimed at protecting macaw species in Colombia since 2019. In 2024, a new project started with Loros Foundation, involving the rehabilitation and subsequent release of birds seized or voluntarily turned over by the environmental authorities.

Green Heart of Cork – Portugal

We support this project since 2011, in a partnership with Associação Natureza Portugal (ANP – Portuguese Nature Association) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), helping to get certification (FSC®) for 30,000 hectares of cork wood forest. The project promotes responsible forest management and conservation.

Clean Tatra Mountains – Poland

Biedronka supports this project, led by Czysta Polska (Clean Poland) Association, since 2019. In the 2024 edition, under the slogan Heads up! , 248 kg of waste was collected in the mountain trails. The first “Clean 5 run” event was also held in Zakopane, involving the planting of 200 trees.
