LOGISTICS WITH PURPOSE

The nearly 9,500 employees who run the distribution centers in Poland, Portugal and Colombia handle about one million cases every day. This entire universe represents the circulatory system of our food distribution business. It is an uninterrupted flow of millions of products which creates a teeming atmosphere in the food supply. And at each stage of the process, one perceives the power of a collective that keeps the entire system in permanent operation.

The investment in a more environmentally efficient fleet is ongoing. In terms of carbon emissions associated with the transport of goods, the aim is to reach the end of 2023 with a 5% reduction in emissions per thousand pallets transported.

Poland

Biedronka is the largest food retail chain in the country. It has 17 distribution centres, which ensure high efficiency in supplying almost 3,400 stores across the country. The fleet consist of more than 1,300 delivery trucks, 92% of which that comply with the latest European regulations on carbon emissions.

Biedronka achieved the first Lean & Green star in 2022, after reducing carbon emissions in its logistic activities by 20% in the period 2017-2020.

Portugal

The eight distribution centers serving Pingo Doce (food retail) and Recheio (cash & carry) chains move more than 840,000 boxes daily. About three-fourths of the truck fleet in Portugal complies with Euro VI standards, the most demanding in terms of carbon emissions.

In 2021, and because of a 46% reduction in emissions between 2018 and 2020, Pingo Doce’s logistics operations was awarded three Lean & Green stars.

Colombia

We have been present in Colombia since March 2013 and Ara’s more than one thousand stores are supplied from six distribution centres. We are investing in more modern vehicles and there is a project using trailers to optimise the transport of goods between the distribution centres and the most distant stores, in terms of journeys and avoided carbon emissions.
